The society is always interested in fresh faces who would like to join in! Membership starts at 16, and there is a broad cross section of ages and abilities. There is an audition process for new members which involves a little singing and dialogue, but don't be put off by this - you can chose the musical piece, and the audition panel (made up of committee members and the Musical Director) have all been through it themselves and are very friendly.
Because of the fixed cycle of productions, it's not always possible to slot someone into a show when they first join. We will usually suggest that you drop in on whatever we happen to be doing at the time so that you can see what we look like and how we work.
After that you'll be welcome to join us at our monthly Members' Evenings, (see Rehearsals page for further details) and we'll keep you informed about the next productions.
If you don't fancy being on stage, we are always on the lookout for people to help backstage or front of house, so do get in touch.
The society holds open auditions for all of its shows. These are open to existing members, new members, and even those still thinking about whether they want to join! Auditions can be a daunting proposition, but we try to make everyone as comfortable as we can, and take account of nervousness....
Anyone interested in auditioning for a show has the opportunity to hear and practise the rehearsal pieces at sing-throughs held a couple of weeks before the auditions themselves. We distribute the music for the audition pieces so you don't have to buy or rent a score. You are allowed to audition for any part, but if you are not succesful for a part you have auditioned for, we do ask whether you would be interested in other roles or appearing in the chorus.
Principal roles are selected on merit alone! New members have as much chance as the old hands. In recent years we have had new members in principal and even lead roles in several shows. We also audition for the chorus, as there may be practical limits on the number of performers on stage or we may be looking for a particular balance.
The audition panel for a show is appointed by the committee and includes (amongst others), the director and musical director. For obvious reasons, members of the panel are not allowed to audition for principal roles.
Membership Fees are £45.00 per year for playing members.
Don't let that worry you at this stage, come along, meet the gang and see how you get on before you pay out for something that might not be for you.
You can also support the society by becoming a Vice-President. This is only £5 a year and gives you access to show information, priority booking and our newsletter.
